Week 09 · Intimacy, delight, and faithfulness

Kept for Each Other

Read together: 1 Corinthians 7:1-5

Also read: Hebrews 13:4 · Song of Solomon 4:9-10 · Proverbs 5:15-19

Physical intimacy in marriage is God's gift, not a concession. Guarding it is part of guarding the marriage.

The heart of it

Paul's instruction is mutual all the way through. Neither spouse owns themselves alone, and neither is to withhold from the other except by agreement, for a season, for prayer. That word agreement rules out both coldness used as punishment and pressure used as a demand.

The Song of Solomon has no embarrassment about delight in each other. Scripture speaks about desire between husband and wife with warmth, not shame. Proverbs 5 tells a man to be satisfied at home, and that satisfaction is presented as a safeguard.

Hebrews sets the fence: marriage is honorable, and the bed is undefiled, and God takes seriously anything that violates it. Faithfulness today is mostly a matter of small decisions, what you look at, who you text, what you laugh at, where your mind is allowed to wander.

What to notice

Talk together

  1. 1How is this part of our marriage, honestly? Say it kindly and say it truly.
  2. 2What makes you feel wanted by me? What makes you feel like an obligation?
  3. 3Are there hurts in this area we have never talked about?
  4. 4What are we each doing to guard our eyes and our hearts? Be specific about phones and screens.
  5. 5What is one thing we could change about our week that would make room for closeness instead of exhaustion?

Your own journal

Answer these on your own during the week. They are yours; you are never required to read them out loud.

1. Am I withholding anything, physically or emotionally, and why?

2. Where am I vulnerable right now? What do I need to cut off, block, or confess?

3. When did I last pursue my spouse rather than wait to be pursued?

4. What do I wish I could say about this and have not?

5. Ask God for a pure heart and write what He brings to mind.

This week's practice

Plan an evening this week with no screens, no children in the room, and no agenda but each other.

"Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled."

Hebrews 13:4

Pray together

Ask God for purity, warmth, and courage to be honest with each other in this area.
