Week 05 · Grace given the way we received it
Forgiveness Without a Ledger
Read together: Matthew 18:21-35
Also read: Colossians 3:12-14 · Psalm 103:8-12
You cannot hold a grudge against the person you are one flesh with and expect the marriage to breathe.
The heart of it
Peter thought seven times was generous. Jesus answered with a number that means stop counting. Then He told a story about a servant forgiven an unpayable debt who turned around and choked a man over pocket change.
The point is proportion. What God forgave in you is the ten thousand talents. What your spouse owes you is real, sometimes deeply painful, and still not the larger debt. Forgiveness is not pretending it did not happen. It is releasing the right to collect.
Jesus ends with a warning that should make us tremble: forgive from your hearts. Not with your mouth while your heart keeps the receipt. In a marriage, an unforgiven wound does not stay still. It hardens, and then everything else you try to build sits on top of it.
What to notice
- The servant asked for patience, not mercy. His master gave more than he asked.
- The forgiven servant's cruelty was public. Other servants saw it and were grieved.
- The debt was reinstated because of how he treated another, not because of his original debt.
- 'From your hearts' rules out managed politeness that never actually lets go.
Talk together
- 1Is there anything between us right now that has never actually been forgiven, only outlasted?
- 2What is the hardest thing you have had to forgive in this marriage? What helped, or what is still stuck?
- 3Do either of us bring up old, already-settled offenses in new arguments?
- 4Take turns finishing this sentence out loud: 'One thing I need to ask your forgiveness for is...'
- 5How do we know when something is truly resolved between us, rather than just quiet?
Your own journal
Answer these on your own during the week. They are yours; you are never required to read them out loud.
1. What am I still holding? Write it plainly, and write what I have been getting out of holding it.
2. What has God forgiven in me that I rarely think about anymore?
3. Is there something I need to confess to my spouse that they do not know about? What is stopping me?
4. Write a prayer releasing one specific offense. Date it.
5. What would change in our home this month if I truly let this go?
This week's practice
Each of you name one thing you are asking forgiveness for, out loud, without adding an explanation or a 'but.'
"Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye."
Colossians 3:13
Pray together
Thank God for the debt He canceled. Ask Him for the willingness to cancel what you have been holding.
