Week 01 · Fruit comes from staying, not straining
Abide
Read together: John 15:1-11
Also read: Galatians 5:22-26 · Psalm 1:1-3
A branch does not produce grapes by trying harder. It stays attached. Everything good in your marriage grows from two people staying attached to Christ.
The heart of it
Jesus does not say abide in Me and you will work harder. He says abide in Me and you will bear fruit, and without Me you can do nothing. That word nothing is not exaggeration for effect. A husband can be disciplined, generous, and patient by sheer effort for a while, and then the effort runs out, usually at home, usually late in the evening.
Notice that the vinedresser prunes the branch that is already bearing. Pruning is not punishment. God cuts back what is taking life away from what matters, and He often does it in a marriage: a schedule, a friendship, an ambition, a habit. It hurts and it is kindness.
The passage ends with joy, not duty. His joy remaining in you, and your joy being full. A marriage that abides in Christ is not grim about obedience. It is lighter, freer, gladder than it was.
What to notice
- Fruit is for others to eat. A branch never consumes its own grapes. What God grows in you is meant to feed your spouse.
- The branch has one job. Stay attached.
- Pruning happens to healthy branches, so a hard season is not proof that God is displeased.
- Abiding is described as His words remaining in us, so what we read and listen to is not a small thing.
Talk together
- 1Where in the last month have you been running on effort rather than on God?
- 2What do you think God may be pruning out of our life right now?
- 3What does abiding actually look like for you on a normal weekday? Be concrete.
- 4Which fruit of the Spirit does our home most need this year? Answer separately, then compare.
- 5Is there joy in our house? What would raise it, and what steals it?
Your own journal
Answer these on your own during the week. They are yours; you are never required to read them out loud.
1. Honest answer: am I attached to Christ right now, or coasting on what I used to have?
2. What am I trying to grow by force that only God can grow in me?
3. What is God asking me to let go of for the sake of my marriage?
4. Write out John 15:5 in your own words, aimed at yourself.
5. Ask God for one specific fruit and write what you are asking Him to change.
This week's challenge
Set one fixed time this week — same time, both of you — to read a short passage and pray out loud together, even for three minutes.
"He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."
John 15:5
Pray together
Ask God to attach both of you to Him again, and to prune what He knows is draining your marriage.
